Sydney, August 18, 2011: Javier Arriaga, The SubStation’s Head of Production, has taken home the Deafness Forum’s Most Consistent Use of Captioning Award for 2011.
. This is awarded to an organisation or person that is judged to have made the most consistent use of captioning in the preceding year, or to have consistently acted for the benefit of captioning over a period of years, in line with the Caption Quality Guidelines.
Deafness Forum is the peak body for deafness and seeks solutions and advocates on issues for all Australians who are deaf, have a hearing impairment or chronic disorder of the ear. The Awards are a highlight industry event organised by Deafness Forum to recognise those who have made the most significant contributions to furthering the awareness and accessibility of captioning.
Javier was welcomed to the stage by overwhelming applause, reflecting just how respected he is within the industry.
“Javier is undoubtedly the best captioner in Australia, and I think it’s safe to say the best captioner in the world,” said Media Access Australia CEO, Alex Varley, on stage.
When accepting his award for captioning consistency, Arriaga called for the improvement of caption quality across media platforms.
For the past 23 years Javier has worked providing captioned programs to all the Australian free-to-air and Pay TV broadcasters, as well as captions and audio description for DVDs and Blu-rays. He joined The SubStation in 2008 as Head of Production and has assembled what has become widely regarded to be the best captioning team in Australia.
